Week 13

Immense suffering of animals has the attention of the ARA.

The Animal Rights Aruba foundation (ARA) regularly gets phone calls about abused or maltreated dogs and other animals. Some stories defy the imagination, especially of people who love animals, and they might serve to help people take notice of circumstances that are far from right. So here is a story, sent in by someone who is clearly very upset about what she witnessed.

``A few days ago I saw a goat near a house under construction. He was limping on three legs; one hind leg was clearly broken and was dangling at a weird angle. When I came closer, I saw that the animal was skin and bones. Inside the house there lay quite a lot of goat waste, so he had been hiding there for quite some time already. I called the vet of the ARA and we agreed that she would come to help the animal by putting it to sleep, but when I went back to feed the goat, I saw that the dangling part of the leg had gone. I looked, but could not find the missing part of the leg. Then I closed the house so that the goat would still be there when the vet would come. In the neighborhood I saw a young dog nibbling on the goat's leg - a horrible sight.''

"A few hours later I came back with the vet, but the goat had gone. A neighbor said that the owner had come to pick up the animal and yes, indeed: we found the goat inside a small shed on the terrain of the owner, with just a piece of cloth tied around the stump, still suffering terribly. When the neighbors told him that people had come by, the owner must have gotten scared, so that he took his goat back in.

We would like to state that this is clearly a case of animal abuse. The owner knew that his injured goat would die when left on its own. His other goats were all fenced in and he had abandoned his animal to die a terrible death. This story might be too late to save this poor goats life, but please notify the ARA when abuse takes place, so that the suffering of animals on Aruba might be lessened

Week 52

guus

Guus was very lucky!!!! We all knew he is special, but that this story would end in such a special way we couldn't have thought. Last Tuesday a nice lady called me and she told me in a very happy mood that Guus was her dog. She sounded so enthusiastic that I believed her right away. Guus's name actually is Ronny and he ran away 3 month ago during a heavy thunderstorm. They searched everywhere for him. Because they didn't have a picture of him made the seeking even more difficult. This proves that it is very important to give your dog a collar and nametag with the name of the dog and the owner's phonenumber. On Aruba, most of the time you're not gonna find your dog when he is not wearing this. Guus is an exception, he was lucky. Don't you think this is a beautiful story? Off the street before christmas and back in his golden bed.

Last Monday I reunited Guus and his owner. She paid for the costs of the medical treatment of Guus. We put the money we received from all the donations for Guus (3200 florin !!!) on the ARA bank account to pay treatments of other dogs in need.

In name of Animal Rights Aruba we wish Guus and his family a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2011.

Week 47.

This week, volunteers and boardmembers had another meet & greet. Martrude explained new strategies and current situation of the ARA to the volunteers. Everyone is very eager to do as much as possible for our beloved animals, though funds are never sufficient to take care of all the problems.

ARA group

Why do things like this happen? It is so hard to understand why some people behave so badly towards animals; vulnerable animals that depend on them. A terrible canine drama took place in Santa Cruz last week: a mother dog was left behind, tied up and starving to death, when its owners had moved away to a new house. Four puppies and their emaciated mother were left, without any ways or means to find food or water. One of the pups died on the back porch – it was found rotting, near the mother and the three surviving pups. A crying shame… As the Animal Rights Aruba (ARA) foundation was alerted to the situation by kindhearted people, they jumped into action and called the former inhabitants of the house. A woman answered the phone, but when she was asked whether she was going to pick up her dogs and take care of them, or whether she would allow ARA to intervene, she got abusive, she shouted and screamed and disconnected. The ARA volunteers then decided that they had to move into action, but when they went to the deserted house to pick up the poor, emaciated dog and her puppies, they had already vanished. The ARA hopes that the owners came to their senses and went to their old house to pick up their pets and take good care of them, but they fear that nothing of the sort has happened. They do not know what has happened. This is a cry for help: things like this should not take place on Aruba. All animals and pets deserve a decent life with good owners, daily food and a bit of attention and love. A deserted dog, a bag of bones, tied up, with no food or water is a truly heartbreaking situation. Things like these should not be happening here. Should you notice any maltreated or abused animals, please contact the ARA by e-mail at ara@setarnet.aw. And if you know where this poor mother dog and her pups live, please let us know. This is a crying shame.

Week 44.

Abused dog

This week ARA received a call from a concerned neighbour, reporting a dog that was deprived of food, suffering from severe mange and who knows what more diseases. ARA went to the owners and got permission to take the dog with them for giving her medical attention. According to the owners, they had the dog for just two weeks yet. As you can see on the picture, the dog must have suffered for more than two weeks to get in this condition. Unfortunately we came to late and the veterinarian couldn't do else but putting her to sleep.

Week 38. This week another two pups were adopted. We are convinced that their new owners will give them all the TLC they deserve. If you have your heart in the right place and willing to give a beautiful puppy a new home, don't hesitate to contact the ARA. We still have puppies available for adoption. Maybe you want something more quiet ? Call us and ask for a more mature dog. They are waiting for you at the shelter to get adopted.
Another dog that was taken care of by the ARA was found at "Club di movimiento" at Bubali. The poor fellow looked sick and hungry as he was found in front of the danceschool. He was wearing a greenish collar so maybe his owner is looking for him. Please contact ARA if you know more about this dog or his owner. You can find a picture of this dog in the "Missing" section.
Our beloved Mocca went of for a long voyage abroad. She flew to the USA were she will be placed at another shelter to raise her changes on adoption. Hopefully she'll be lucky and can wiggle her little tail for a new family soon.

Week 34. During a search for Whitey, Desiree stumbled upon another dog in need and she took her to the vet. She was sick and after treatment Desiree took her to the shelter. Unfortenately Rakker's -as we called her- condition got worse and after a couple of days she died. Four new pups were taken care of by the ARA.They were brought by a woman who's brother couldn't take care of them. They are called Carlos, Bruce, Bella and Donna. Look on the adoption page for more pictures.

Week 32. Last week several dogs left the ARA for adoption. From the shelter, Titty, Fleur and Benthe found their way to a new home.Benthe Though we will miss them, we're very happy for them and hope they'll get the life they deserve. On the picture you see Ms. Kelkboom, signing the adoption papers with her happy grandchild and of course a happy Benthe. Also Rembrand, one of Fleur's pups got adopted. MokkieBeside his new home, he got a new name and now is called Mokkie. It's easy to see how happy Rembrand and his new owner are together. The three pups that were dropped at the shelter found a new home almost immediately. You can see two of them with their new owner on the picture below. It's hard to imagine why somebody wanted to get rid of those cuties. All together it was a great week for the ARA with so many adoptions. Now lets hope our other inhabitants also will be lucky soon. They're all great companions and they all deserve a second change.
